TSS Leading the Way with New Metrics

The Studio School (TSS) is proud to be at the forefront of redefining education in Western Australia. As an early adopter of the University of Melbourne’s New Metrics program, we’ve been championing a transformative approach to learning.

But what exactly is New Metrics, and why is it making waves in the education sector?

New Metrics provides a competency-based education for learners, focusing on the skills and capabilities that allow students to thrive at school and beyond. At its core, New Metrics shifts the focus from traditional academic results to a more holistic view of student success. By prioritising the development, assessment and recognition of key competencies—such as critical thinking, collaboration and agency—the program aims to equip students with the tools they need for a thriving future and equip teachers with the means to assess these competencies.

TSS is an ideal fit for the New Metrics program, as our micro-school environment is deeply focused on developing the whole person. Our project-based learning model allows teachers to see students across all aspects of their life, fostering strong relationships and a deep understanding of their individual strengths and capabilities.

A key driver of recent progress at TSS has been the confidence of our teachers-facilitators, who are uniquely positioned to assess students’ capabilities based on their ongoing relationships with them. Teachers at TSS understand their students holistically and can provide meaningful assessments that reflect not just academic performance but their overall growth and development.

"TSS is the right fit for the New Metrics project is really about the size of our team and our ability to moderate and have conversations to make those judgements based on what we see in day-to-day life.," said Cat Donnelly, Assistant Head of Campus. "We see our students across all aspects of their life while they are on campus with us so we know them really, really well," she added.

The personalised learning approach and the alternative model of curriculum delivery at TSS means the New Metrics assessment model is a natural fit for TSS and we are proud of our community for embracing this program that helps develop important skills for life beyond school.
