A Celebration of Student-Led Learning

Last week, The Studio School’s Term 1 Project Showcase brought together students, families, educators and guests from Perth and across Australia for a celebration of student-led learning and creativity. Held alongside the ReimaginED Conference in Fremantle, the showcase offered a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when they’re given time, space and trust to explore their interests.

From music and design to sustainability, tech and beyond, every project was a reflection of each student’s personal interests, real-world inquiry and future aspirations. TSS’s project-based learning model encourages students to pursue meaningful work, and this term’s showcase highlighted just how diverse and ambitious those projects can be.

Visitors were invited to explore a range of interactive displays, ask questions and connect directly with the minds behind the work. Our students rose to the occasion, presenting their ideas with confidence, clarity and a strong sense of purpose.

The amazing array of projects included:

1. Scarlett’s Creative Fashion Brand

Scarlett (Year 10) launched Frankie’s Closet, a bold and expressive clothing line featuring original graphic designs and professional photo shoots. From concept to content creation, Scarlett has built a brand identity with a strong visual voice—and even launched a TikTok and Instagram to grow her audience.

2. Axel’s Short Film Sequel

Working with a small team, Axel is writing and directing Familia Whispers, a cinematic sequel exploring themes of grief and connection through supernatural storytelling. The Showcase offered a sneak peek at the script development and creative planning underway.

3. Eden’s Interior Design Concepts

Eden shared a series of mood boards and aesthetic studies for reimagined living spaces. Her project is supporting her studies in a TAFE design course, and she plans to continue expanding into spatial planning and budgeting across the year.

4. Lachlan’s Custom Bike Frames

With a deep interest in mechanics and mountain biking, Lachlan is learning to weld and design high-performance steel bike frames. His process combines practical skills with research into geometry, suspension and material properties—pushing both his engineering knowledge and creative thinking.

5. Abbie & Finn’s FreoCast Radio Show

Abbie and Finn have taken over a weekly slot on Fremantle’s community radio station, producing a show filled with student interviews, music, and stories. They’ve already released their first episode and are inviting more students to get involved.

6. Noah’s Vertical Garden Prototype

With a focus on urban sustainability, Noah designed a space-saving garden system complete with automated watering. Built to suit small homes and balconies, his project offered practical solutions for greener living

‍7. Oisín’s Shear-Thickening Fluid Research

Oisín investigated the use of shear-thickening fluids in neck braces, inspired by their own medical diagnosis. Their research connected science, innovation and real-world application, with support from Murdoch University to access lab facilities.

These projects, and so many more shared on the day, reflect the values at the heart of TSS: curiosity, collaboration, and a belief in the potential of every learner. We couldn’t be prouder of what our students have already achieved this year and can’t wait to see where Term 2 takes them.
